Production

Following a bidding battle, Netflix was revealed in June 2019 to have bought the film rights to Aaron Blabey’s children’s book Thelma the Unicorn and was working on an animated musical version. Jared Hess, who co-wrote the screenplay with his wife Jerusha, would direct it, and Blabey and Patrick Hughes would serve as executive producers. In April 2023, Pam Coats was confirmed as the film’s producer. The animation was produced by Mikros Animation.

The cast was revealed in January 2024 and included Brittany Howard, Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Heder, Maliaka Mitchell, and Ally Dixon. Since Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and the eponymous animated TV series (2012), Heder and Hess have collaborated twice.
