Nimona (film)
The planned American computer-animated science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and comedy film Nimona is based on the ND Stevenson comic book series of the same name. The movie is written by Marc Haimes and directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, and Chloe Grace Moretz all provide their voices to the film.
It was initially planned to be directed by Patrick Osborne and released in 2020. It was a Blue Sky Studios project, a former division of 20th Century Fox. The production encountered resistance from Disney’s new leadership when it acquired 21st Century Fox because of the movie’s LGBTQ themes. As a result, it had a series of delays until being abandoned as a result of Blue Sky’s closure in April 2021.
The project was resurrected by Annapurna Pictures on April 11, 2022, with DNEG Animation taking over production, and the movie’s release date was changed to Netflix in 2023.
Nimona Premise
Nimona, a teenager with the power to shapeshift, is targeted by a knight for assassination. The knight’s mission to kill Nimona becomes complicated when he is accused of a crime, and learns that Nimona may be able to exonerate him.A knight has set Nimona, a teenage girl with the ability to shape-shift, up for murder. When the knight gets charged with a crime and finds that Nimona might be able to clear him, his plan to kill Nimona is complex.
Nimona Voice cast
Nimona, a shapeshifter who insists on being Ballister Blackheart’s sidekick, is portrayed by Chloe Grace Moretz.
Ballister Blackheart, played by Riz Ahmed, was formerly a knight for the Institution but was expelled after losing an arm in a duel with Ambrosius Goldenloin.
Ambrosius Goldenloin, the Institution’s champion knight, is portrayed by Eugene Lee Yang.
Improvement
Nimona, a webcomic by ND Stevenson, was adapted into an animated feature film by 20th Century Fox Animation in June 2015. From a script by Marc Haimes, Patrick Osborne was supposed to direct.
The movie was going to be made by Blue Sky Studios, a former Fox company, and Vertigo Entertainment. 20th Century Fox set the release date of Nimona for February 14, 2020 in June 2017.
Disney’s takeover and delays
Following the completion of Disney’s acquisition of Fox in March 2019, the movie was postponed to March 5, 2021, in May 2019. The movie was again postponed, this time until January 14, 2022, in November 2019. The movie was supposed to be out in 2022, but Stevenson indicated in June 2020 that it was still in the works and reiterated it in an August 2020 podcast. The animated movie was still expected to be released in 2022, according to Den of Geek in August of the same year. Deadline reported the same in October.
Nimona Termination and consequences
Disney confirmed the closure of Blue Sky Studios and the cancellation of the movie’s production on February 9, 2021.
Following the announcement, Osborne expressed his “true heartbreak” that the studio was closing, while Stevenson described it as a “sad day” and sent his best wishes for everyone who worked at Blue Sky Studios. Gary Tyrrell, a webcomic commentator, attacked the choice and said, “A totally different type of young heroine might have been approved by [Disney]. I grieve for individuals who could have recognized themselves in the cartoon version “.
According to unnamed Blue Sky employees contacted by Business Insider, the termination of the movie was “heartbreaking,” it “didn’t look like anything else in the animation industry,” and it would never “be completed and published.”
Blue Sky’s Conduit, a tool for artists to “discover, track, version, and quality control their work,” was slated to be used for the first time on this movie. It would have been Blue Sky’s first LGBT-representation movie if it had been produced, since a few employees told BuzzFeed News that the movie had a “I love you” sequence between Ballister Blackheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin.
According to sources, the movie was “75% complete.” Before it was canceled, a team member said that the movie was “on pace” to be done by October 2021. Rick Fournier, a former animator at Blue Sky, claimed that the company came “very, very close” to finishing the movie but “found out it just was not viable.”
Chloe Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed were set to voice Nimona and Ballister Blackheart, respectively, according to a March 2021 story, and the movie was reportedly being shopped around to different companies to be finished. A writer for Out named Mey Rude stated in June 2021 that she still had “hope that this film… would find its way back to life in some manner.”
Three former Blue Sky employees claimed that in March 2022, amid the controversy surrounding Disney’s involvement in Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill and CEO Bob Chapek’s lack of criticism prior to the bill’s passage, the movie received pushback from Disney leadership due to its LGBT themes and a same-sex kiss.
Reunion
On April 11, 2022, news broke that Nimona had been acquired by Annapurna Pictures earlier in the year and will be available on Netflix in 2023. Eugene Lee Yang was added to the voice cast, which was also kept, Ambrosius Goldenloin said at this time.
Nimona Release Date
Nimona is set to be released on Netflix in the summer of 2023. It will be the first release from Annapurna Animation.
