Strange World

The American science adventure movie Strange World was released in 2022 by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was produced by Roy Conli, written and co-directed by Qui Nguyen, and directed by Don Hall as the studio’s 61st animated movie. Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu provide the voices for the movie. The movie, which is set in Avalonia, follows the Clades (Gyllenhaal, Quaid, Young-White, and Union), a renowned family of explorers and the exploration’s leader, who must put aside their differences in order to travel to a mysterious land populated by bizarre lifeforms in order to prevent the Pando resource from losing its energy power source.

King Kong, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and pulp publications all served as inspiration for Strange World. Additionally, the color palette for Avalonia was orange and white, in contrast to the red and magenta used for the namesake weird realm. A team of animators collaborated to make the character Splat’s movement, which he uses to communicate nonverbally. Even though the movie uses CGI most of the time, there are a few instances where Randy Haycock’s 2D animation and additional 2D animation by Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn are used.

On November 15, 2022, Strange World had its world debut at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, and on November 23, it was theatrically distributed in the US. The movie made headlines for featuring the first openly LGBTQ lead character created by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Despite the largely favorable reviews from reviewers, the movie bombed at the box office, costing Disney as much as $147 million.

Strange World Storyline

Jaeger Clade and his son Searcher are explorers who traverse the wilderness to discover new planets in the mountainous continent of Avalonia. A plant that emits green energy is found by Searcher as he attempts to cross one of the mountains. Jaeger is adamant about going on the hunt, but Searcher and the other members of the expedition team think the new plant, Pando, is sufficient. Jaeger continues his task on his own, angry. After 25 years, Searcher has established a reputation for himself by capturing Pando and using it as a fuel source for Avalonia. He has a kid named Ethan who blushes everytime Searcher attempts to chat to his crush Diazo. He is married to fellow harvester Meridian.

The Clades are informed that the Pando is losing power and that Searcher is needed to assist them identify the problem one day by Callisto Mal, the ruler of Avalonia and one of Jeager’s previous expedition partners, who arrives aboard a massive airship called the Venture. In order to enter a massive sinkhole where huge Pando roots have been discovered, he joins a brand-new expedition team. Meridian attempts to catch up in her crop duster on the way down after Ethan and their dog Legend slip onto the ship. When they are besieged by monsters that resemble red wyverns, Ethan’s desire to travel with Searcher was cut short. They continue to descend until they burst through the crust and arrive in a subterranean realm.

When Searcher and Legend become separated from the group during the crash, they are attacked by a creature known as a Reaper. Jaeger, who has been living underground all these years, saves them and reveals that he has tried to cross the acidic ocean that blocks the route under the mountain but is unable to do so. He chooses to assist in the search for the Venture in order to get across it. While the others are working on getting the ship ready, Ethan goes out to look for Searcher and finds a blue creature he calls Splat, who tries to take him to his father. They eventually come under assault from additional Reapers, but they also get to see Searcher, Legend, and Jaeger again. Meridian and Callisto quickly arrive to save them as they escape the monsters and head back to the Venture.

While Jaeger wants to keep exploring the Strange World, Searcher is adamant about finishing their task. Callisto consents to assist in repairing the ship so they may go with their journey. Ethan feels irritated with Searcher and Jaeger during this time because he recognizes their divergent viewpoints. After yet another tumultuous meeting, Searcher and Jaeger ultimately sit down and have a serious discussion, realizing that they truly appreciate one another’s aspirations in life. As the Pando is being attacked by the animals, they eventually come upon a root cluster of the location. They decide to attempt and aid the Pando since they think it is retaliating.

Ethan storms off in anger after another disagreement between Searcher and Jaeger about Jaeger’s effect on him. While making up, Searcher realizes that they are floating over an unending ocean in front of a gigantic eye that has a mountain on top of it and that he is following him in a little flying craft. The two understand that the Pando is an infection that has to be eradicated and that Avalonia is riding on the back of a massive turtle-like monster whose body they have been traversing. When they return to share the news with everyone, everyone are shocked. Jaeger storms off to verify it, Callisto and the gang lock up the Clades to keep them from completing their job, but Legend and Splat free the family.

While Meridian takes control of the ship and eventually persuades Callisto, Searcher and Ethan go to the root cluster, which is truly the heart, to stop the Pando from destroying the Earth. Jaeger returns after having a change of heart, and they successfully penetrate the Pando. The earth is abruptly saved by creatures that revive the heart but destroy the Pando power source.

Avalonia has switched from Pando energy to wind turbines, Jaeger sees his ex-wife, who has remarried after his “death,” and Searcher and Jaeger’s friendship has become better. A year later, Ethan is dating Diazo while they and his friends gather resources from the Strange World.

Voice cast

Jake Gyllenhaal is voiced as Searcher Clade, the Pando power source’s farmer and father to Ethan, Jaeger, Meridian, and Searcher.

Dennis Quaid plays the grandpa of Ethan and Searcher, Jaeger Clade.

The 16-year-old son of Searcher, played by Jaboukie Young-White, Ethan Clade, yearns for experiences outside of his father’s farm while juggling a school infatuation.

Ethan, a gay character, is the first prominent member of the LGBTQ+ community created by Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Ethan’s mother Meridian Clade and the wife of the Searcher, who is a pilot and a natural leader, are played by Gabrielle Union.

Callisto Mal, played by Lucy Liu, is the president of Avalonia and in charge of the expedition into the unknown planet.

The geeky member of the Strange World expedition, Caspian, is played by Karan Soni.

Alan Tudyk plays Duffle, a pilot for the Strange World mission who is slain by monsters resembling wyverns. His part is a nod to Hoban “Wash” Washburn from Tudyk’s Firefly.

In addition, Tudyk provides the voices for the radio announcer and the movie’s opening narration.

Captain Pulk, the second-in-command of the mission to Strange World, is played by Adelina Anthony.

Abraham Benrubi plays Lonnie Redshirt, a sizable member of the Strange World expedition. His last name alludes to the Star Trek tradition of minor deaths for people wearing red shirts.

Diazo, played by Jonathan Melo, is Ethan’s love interest.

Kardez, played by Nik Dodani, is a buddy of Ethan’s.

One of Ethan’s friends, Azimuth, is played by Francesca Reale.

Myth, a three-legged dog from the Clades, and Splat, a blue creature from the Strange World, are credited as portraying themselves in the end credits.

Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed Strange World in December 2021, with Roy Conli serving as producer, Qui Nguyen serving as co-director and writer, and Don Hall serving as director.

Strange World Casting

Jake Gyllenhaal was revealed as the Searcher Clade’s voice actor on June 8, 2022, following the publication of the teaser trailer. Nine days later, during France’s Annecy Animation Festival, the remaining members of the film’s principal cast—Dennis Quaid as Jaeger Clade, Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, and Jaboukie Young-White as Ethan Clade—were revealed.

Strange World ideas, design, and animation

Strange World, in Hall’s opinion, pays homage to pulp magazines—popular literature from the first half of the 20th century that was published on low-cost wood pulp paper and included movies like King Kong and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

He said as well “When he was younger, [he] enjoyed reading pulp magazines. They were large-scale adventures where a party of explorers would come across a secret realm or extinct species. They have greatly influenced Strange World.”

The realm of Avalonia was given an orange and white color scheme for the worlds above and below the huge beast in contrast to the namesake weird world within the creature, for which the filmmakers picked red and magenta for the lung forest. Like the magic carpet in Aladdin, they devised a means of non-verbal communication for the character Splat. While the majority of the movie is CGI, Randy Haycock added some 2D animation, while Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn provided further 2D animation.

Music

Henry Jackman, the composer of Big Hero 6 and the Wreck-It Ralph movies, was confirmed to write the score for Strange World on September 5, 2022. This will be his third project with Don Hall after Winnie the Pooh and Big Hero 6, as well as his fifth overall feature-length scoring project with Walt Disney Animation Studios. Walt Disney Records issued the soundtrack on November 23, 2022, the same day as the movie’s theatrical debut. The original song, composed by James Hayden and James Hayden with lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila, is also included on the soundtrack. Strange World Commercializing

The movie’s first trailer debuted on December 9, 2021. The picture “[looks] a lot like Avatar, or at the very least the Pandora area of Disney World’s Animal Kingdom,” according to Max Evry of /Film. On June 6, 2022, the teaser trailer was published. It was “an tribute to old sci-fi films,” according to Petrana Radulovic of Polygon, and like Raya and the Last Dragon, it “certainly seems to lean more towards the action than Disney’s normal musical fantasy.” The original trailer was published on September 21, 2022, followed by a cast response video the next day, and a “special look” trailer was released on October 19, 2022. A new trailer was debuted during the 2022 D23 Expo. On November 3, 2022, and November 8, 2022, respectively, the featurettes “Welcome To Strange World” and “100 Years of Amazing Characters,” which featured the characters of Splat and Legend, were published.

Strange World Cinematic

On November 15, 2022, the theatrical Strange World had its debut at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. On November 23, 2022, it received a theatrical release in the United States.

Due to Disney’s opposition to local rules regarding theatrical windows, Strange World was not released theatrically in some regions. The company announced on June 8, 2022 that Strange World would not see a theatrical release in France and would instead go straight to Disney+ in the region after its theatrical release in other regions. Deadline Hollywood also claimed that Disney withdrew for a theatrical release in 20 countries, primarily the Middle East and Africa.

LGBTQ+ allusions are present in the movie since one of the key plot lines involves Ethan harboring feelings for another boy.

The commemorative 100th anniversary Disney logo, developed by Disney Studios Content and Industrial Light & Magic in honor of the company’s centenary in 2023, had its debut in this movie. When You Wish Upon a Star has a fresh arrangement by Christophe Beck.
