In May 2016, it was announced that there would be a remake of The Little Mermaid from 1989. Disney said Marshall would helm a live-action version of The Little Mermaid 2023 in December 2017. A large portion of the core cast signed on in June and will remain through November 2019. From January to July 2021, Pinewood Studios in England served as the primary location for filming.

Adapted on a tale by Magee, Marshall, and John DeLuca, David Magee and Jane Goldman wrote the script for the forthcoming American musical fantasy film The Little Mermaid, which will be directed by Rob Marshall. It is a live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 animated picture of the same name, which was in turn partially based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairy tale of the same name. Audio actors

Sebastian, played by Daveed Diggs, is a devoted crab who serves as King Triton’s trusty aide and court composer while keeping an eye on Ariel.

Ariel’s best buddy is the nervous yet honorable tropical fish Flounder, played by Jacob Tremblay.

Awkwafina portrays Scuttle, a stupid diving bird who is Ariel’s companion and to whom she gives false descriptions of each people or thing from the surface world that Ariel discovers. In order to appear in underwater sequences, the character will be represented as a female diving bird rather than a male seagull as in the original.

In addition, unnamed parts for Simone Ashley, Adrian Christopher, Russell Balogh, and Jessica Alexander have been cast.

Deadline Hollywood claimed on May 25, 2016, that Disney is working on a live-action version of The Little Mermaid. A fan of the original movie, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will co-produce the movie alongside Marc Platt, it was revealed on August 16, 2016. The Walt Disney Company is reportedly courting Rob Marshall to helm the movie, while Jane Goldman will write the screenplay, according to a story from December 6, 2017. On December 5, 2018, Marshall disclosed that he, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt had been hired to start developing the script for the film adaptation. He added that “John and [Marshall] have begun our work trying to explore it and figure it out”, as he believed “it’s a very difficult movie to take from animation to live-action. We’re beginning the research phase because live-action is a totally different universe, so you have to be very careful about how that’s done. Marshall was formally appointed to helm the movie later in December. In a December 21, 2018, interview, Marshall said that the movie is still in its very early phases of development and that the company is looking at methods to adapt the story of the original movie for live-action. On July 3, 2019, it was made public that David Magee and Goldman co-wrote the screenplay for Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns. Miranda said that the movie’s initial dress rehearsals had started on February 10, 2020.

The Little Mermaid 2023 Casting

Chris Evans and Lindsay Lohan both indicated interest in playing the lead roles in the adaptation, while other fans preferred Ariana Grande to portray Ariel. From late 2018 to early 2019, Zendaya reportedly received an offer for the lead part, but she insisted it was “just a rumor.”

It was revealed on June 28, 2019, that Melissa McCarthy was in discussions to play Ursula in the movie. Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay were speculated to have been cast in the movie two days later, portraying, respectively, a suddenly gender-bent Scuttle and Ariel’s sidekick Flounder. Filming

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed filming, which was initially expected to start in London in late March or early April 2020. A few weeks after the shooting was halted, set photographs from Pinewood Studios in London, England, were released. They featured overhead shots of Prince Eric’s ship as well as inside shots of what seemed to be his palace. According to a post on social media, Jacob Tremblay started writing his lines for the movie on July 9, 2020. The rescheduled start date for filming was set for August 10, 2020.

On January 30, 2021, Pinewood Studios in Iver, England, officially started principal photography. McCarthy’s sequences ultimately started to be filmed in April 2021. On April 6, it was revealed that more filming will take place in Sardinia, Italy, throughout the summer for a total of “approximately three months.” In June 2021, a number of the movie’s team members contracted COVID-19, which briefly halted production. A week or so later, filming started again, and it was finally finished on July 11, 2021. Bailey published some fresh behind-the-scenes images from the shoot on December 30, 2021, showing off her interpretation as Ariel in one of them. On March 17, 2017, it was revealed that Alan Menken, who had previously composed the soundtrack and co-wrote the songs for the original movie, would return to work on the project. He would also collaborate with producer Lin-Manuel Miranda to develop new songs. Three months later, Menken revealed that his Mary Poppins Returns schedule had forced him to postpone his work on the soundtrack. After the debut of the live-action version of Aladdin in 2019, Menken said on May 20 that The Little Mermaid will be his next endeavor[61]. On July 9, he and Miranda began writing new songs for the movie. [62] Miranda asserted that “no one can write like him” when it came to replacing the late Howard Ashman, who wrote the lyrics for the original movie, and that “[he] will undoubtedly fall short” of Ashman’s work.

The remake will include the original movie’s song “Part of Your World,” according to Halle Bailey’s announcement on January 16, 2020. In a statement made on February 10, 2020, Miranda and Menken said they co-wrote four new songs for the movie.

Menken stated that the new tracks will be a “blend” of his and Miranda’s styles on February 19, 2021. He went on to say that the tracks will have “some rapping” in the manner of Miranda’s earlier works as well as a more conventional approach.

In an interview with Disney’s For Scores podcast on September 22, 2021, Menken revealed that the movie will include four new songs. He also revealed that Miranda was “daunted” by the idea of continuing the musical legacy of the late Howard Ashman, the lyricist who collaborated with Menken to create the songs for the original film. In a recent interview with Collider on November 24, 2021, Miranda discussed his love of The Little Mermaid and how Menken and Ashman influenced his formative years.

Marketing

Rob Marshall and Halle Bailey made an appearance at the 2022 D23 Expo on September 9, 2022, to deliver an exclusive preview of the movie’s “Part of Your World” scene. Attendees responded well to the presentation and applauded Bailey’s vocal performance. On the same day, the public saw the teaser trailer for the movie.

Debate

The public’s reaction to the movie’s decision to cast a black actress as Ariel, who was initially white in the 1989 animated picture, was mixed after Halle Bailey’s announcement of her selection as Ariel in July 2019 and after the debut of the first trailer in September 2022. A black mermaid, it has been argued, does not conform to historical authenticity, the adaptation should be as true to the source material as possible, and mermaids are purportedly unable to be black since they are aquatic beings.

The producer and songwriter of the movie, Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as other media sites, denounced the harsh reaction and called it racist. Whether Ariel is black or white, it is obvious that the movie should be disregarded and then forgotten forever, according to Stuart Heritage of The Guardian.
