Future anime fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novel, will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama from a script by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The War of the Rohirrim, a live-action sequel to the live-action The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, is the seventh entry in Peter Jackson’s canon of Middle-earth audiovisual works. It was produced by New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation, and Sola Entertainment for the anime version.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) prequel, starring Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, depicts events that took place 183 years before. Miranda Otto, who played Éowyn in the live-action The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, co-stars.

Set Sail For A Funny Tale Animated TV Series

By June 2021, when the movie’s fast-tracked production was formally revealed, Kamiyama, consultant Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and original writers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews were all on board. By that time, animation production had started, drawing visual inspiration from such movies. By February 2022, Gittins and Papageorgiou began writing the script.

Development

The film company New Line Cinema stated in June 2021 that it was accelerating the creation of an anime prequel feature alongside Warner Bros. Animation during the 20th anniversary festivities for the release of the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, a movie that takes place 183 years before The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) tells the tale of Helm Hammerhand, a character who is discussed in the appendices of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novel and is the inspiration for the fortress Helm’s Deep that can be seen in The Two Towers. After doing the same for Warner Bros.’ anime television series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Kenji Kamiyama and Joseph Chou were slated to direct and produce the movie, respectively, with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews penning the script. Philippa Boyens, a co-writer of the trilogy’s three films, provided advice for the prequel in order for it to tie into the trilogy’s storyline.

Peter Jackson, the trilogy’s director, and Fran Walsh, another co-writer, were not participating in the endeavor.

Boyens’ daughter Phoebe Gittins and her writing partner Arty Papageorgiou began composing the script in February 2022, based on a narrative by Addiss and Matthews. After all, working on the live-action trilogy, Richard Taylor, the creative director of special effects studio Wt Workshop, and illustrators Alan Lee and John Howe also joined the film’s creative team.

Casting

By the time the movie’s announcement in June 2021, voice casting had already started, and announcements were anticipated soon after February 2022. With Miranda Otto reprising her role as Éowyn from the live-action movie to serve as the narrator, it was announced in June that Brian Cox will be lending his voice to Helm. Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski were also announced to have been cast in the movie.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Animation
