James Cameron is the director of the 2022 American epic science fiction movie Avatar: The Way of Water, which was based on a scenario by Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno and a screenplay by Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. It is the follow-up to Avatar (2009) and the second installment in the Avatar franchise. It was produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and TSG Entertainment and was made available by 20th Century Studios. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald are among the cast members who return in their roles from the first movie, while Sigourney Weaver plays a new part. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement are among the new cast members. In the movie, Worthington’s character Jake Sully and his family travel to Pandora’s waters in search of the Metkayina family.

Following the huge success of the original movie, Cameron announced the first two sequels in 2010, with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release. He had previously mentioned in 2006 that he would want to develop sequels to Avatar if it was successful. However, the decision to make a total of five Avatar movies and the requirement to create new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never before accomplished, caused significant delays that gave the cast and crew more time to work on the scripting, preproduction, and visual effects. The filming began on August 15, 2017 in Manhattan Beach, California, concurrently with the production of a third, as of yet untitled movie. After three years of filming, the setting changed to Wellington on September 25, 2017, and the final day of production was in late September 2020. It is one of the most costly movies ever created with an estimated budget of $350-460 million.

Avatar: The Way of Water had its London premiere on December 6, 2022, and was theatrically released in the US on December 16, 2022, following many delays to the anticipated release date. The movie has made about $434 million worldwide, making it the tenth-highest earning movie of 2022. Critics have given the movie favorable reviews, praising its visual effects and technological accomplishments but criticizing its shallow plot and protracted runtime. [10] The American Film Institute and the National Board of Review both listed Avatar: The Way of Water as one of the top 10 movies of 2022. Along with these honors, the movie garnered nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards’ Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director categories.

Avatar: The Way of Water Plot

More than ten years after the Na’vi repelled the human invasion of Pandora,[a] Jake Sully continues to reside there as the Omaticaya clan’s chief and raises a family with Neytiri that consists of his sons Neteyam and Lo’ak; biological daughter Tuk; adopted daughter Kiri (born from Grace Augustine’s inert Na’vi avatar); and a human boy named Spider, who is the offspring of Colonel Miles Quaritch.

To the dismay of the Na’vi, while Earth is dying, humans return to Pandora to prepare it for humanity’s resettlement. A new major operations base called “Bridgehead City” is built by them. Recombinants, Na’vi avatars possessing the memories of deceased RDA marines, are among the newcomers, and Quaritch’s recombinant is their leader. Jake starts a covert operation to disrupt the RDA supply lines. In a counterinsurgency operation against Jake, Quaritch and his recombinants capture Jake’s children. Most of them are let free when Jake and Neytiri arrive, but Spider is captured by Quaritch, who recognizes him as his son. He chooses to spend time with him in an effort to win Spider over, and in return, Spider instructs Quaritch on the language and culture of the Na’vi.

Even though some tribesmen believe they have “demon blood” for their genetic human heritage, Jake and his family flee the Omaticaya because they are worried about the threat Spider’s knowledge of their whereabouts poses to their safety. They then seek refuge with the Metkayina reef people clan on Pandora’s eastern seaboard. Lo’ak makes friends with Tsireya, the daughter of clan leader Tonowari and his wife Ronal, and the family learns the customs of the reef people. Kiri also has a spiritual connection with the sea and its inhabitants.

Aonung, the brother of Tsireya, and Lo’ak fight. Aonung and his companions lure him into a trip into the region of a hazardous marine predator and leave him stranded when he returns to apologize at Jake’s urging. The intelligent and pacifistic cetacean species known as a tulkun, which the Metkayina regard as their spiritual family, saves Lo’ak and befriends him. Upon his return, Lo’ak accepts responsibility for his actions and befriends Aonung; nevertheless, he learns that Payakan is an outcast among his race.

Avatar: The Way of Water Cast

Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a former human who joined the Avatar Program, fell in love with Neytiri, became friends with the Na’vi, and ultimately joined their side in their fight with humans, helping them win. He permanently gave up his human form to become a Na’vi, and he is now the Omaticaya tribe’s leader.

Sigourney Weaver plays Kiri, the adoptive adolescent daughter of Jake and Neytiri, and Zoe Saldaa plays Neytiri, the future Tsahk of the tribe and Jake’s partner. Weaver initially made an appearance as Dr. Grace Augustine in the first movie. She would return in the follow-up films, as both Weaver and Cameron acknowledged, although she said in 2014 that she wouldn’t reprise the same role.

Weaver returns in the movie as Dr. Grace Augustine, a human scientist who sides with the Na’vi and perishes in battle. Despite dying, Kiri was shown to have been born by her Na’vi avatar. In this movie, she makes two appearances: in a video recording and in a visionary encounter with Kiri.

Stephen Lang played Colonel Miles Quaritch, a human who oversaw the RDA’s security troops throughout their struggle with the Na’vi. The RDA was the human organisation conquering Pandora. He has been revived as a Recombinant, which is defined as “avatars infused with the memories of human[s],” and he is seeking retribution for being slain by Neytiri in the first movie. Lang would return in the first three sequels, according to Cameron’s 2010 statement “It’s a science fiction movie, so I won’t reveal how we’re bringing him back in detail. Over the course of our brand-new three-film story, his character will develop in some truly surprising ways.” Later, he declared that in all four sequels, Quaritch will serve as the major adversary once more.

Ronal, a pregnant free diver from the Metkayina and Tonowari’s wife, is portrayed by Kate Winslet. Even though it only took a month to film all of her sequences, Winslet described Ronal as “a vital figure in the unfolding plot” and “quite minor comparison to the extended filming.” She is employing motion capture and performance capture for the first time. She, like the majority of the actors, had to learn free diving for the movie. She set a new record for an underwater film sequence by holding her breath for more than seven minutes while filming one underwater scene.

Tonowari, played by Cliff Curtis, is Ronal’s spouse and the leader of the Metkayina reef people tribe.

Joel David Moore plays Dr. Norm Spellman, a former participant in the Avatar Program who, in the first movie, sided with the Na’vi.

CCH Pounder plays Mo’at, the Tsahk of the Omaticaya and the mother of Neytiri.

General Frances Ardmore, the officer in charge of the RDA’s interests, is played by Edie Falco.

On the planet of Pandora, Brendan Cowell plays Captain Mick Scoresby, the captain of a private marine hunting vessel.

Dr. Ian Garvin, a marine researcher, is played by Jemaine Clement.

Jake and Neytiri’s first son and oldest kid, Neteyam, is portrayed by James Flatters.

Chloe Coleman portrays the young Lo’ak, played by Britain Dalton, the second son of Jake and Neytiri.

Trinity Jack Champion plays Miles Socorro, the teenage son of Quaritch born in Hell’s Gate (the human base on Pandora in the first movie), who was rescued and adopted by Jake and Neytiri and “prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest.” Jo-Li Bliss plays Tuktirey, Jake and Neytiri’s eight-year-old daughter, and their youngest child.

Filip Geljo plays Aonung, a young male hunter and free diver of the Metkayina and Tonowari and Ronal’s kid. Bailey Bass plays Tsireya (“Reya”), a graceful and strong free diver of the Metkayina and Tonowari.

Rotxo, a teenage Metkayina hunter and free diver, is portrayed by Duane Evans, Jr.

Parker Selfridge, a former corporate administrator for the RDA mining company, is portrayed by Giovanni Ribisi.

In the first movie, Dileep Rao played Dr. Max Patel, a scientist who participated in the Avatar Program and later came to support Jake’s uprising against the RDA.

In the RDA’s conflict with the Na’vi, Matt Gerald plays Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, a mercenary who had previously been murdered by a hammerhead titanothere and had been resurrected as a Recombinant. Gerald’s return to the job was announced for August 2017.

Trivia

The four screenplays for the Avatar sequels were split amongst the writing team of Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, according to James Cameron, who said that the project was so extensive. The plot process is further explained by Cameron: “We whiteboarded every scene in every movie together over the course of, I believe, seven months of meetings, and I didn’t decide which writer would work on which movie until the very last day. If I gave them their screenplays in advance, I knew they would stop listening whenever we discussed the other movie.”
