Garfield (2024 film)

An forthcoming computer-animated comedy picture in the United States by the name of Garfield is based on the same-named Jim Davis comic strip. As the voice of the title character, Chris Pratt is joined by Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Ving Rhames in the film, which was directed by Mark Dindal from a screenplay by David Reynolds and produced by Columbia Pictures, Alcon Entertainment in their first animated film, and DNEG Animation with Sony Pictures Releasing distributing.

In May 2016, work on a fresh computer-generated animated Garfield movie started. The film’s director, Dindal, was revealed in November 2018, and shooting got under way the following month. Dindal reported in December 2020 that the movie was continuing in development even though Viacom had acquired the rights to Garfield in August 2019. Pratt was cast as Garfield, and DNEG would handle the animation, after Sony Pictures bought the movie’s distribution rights outside of China in November 2021.

Garfield Release date

The American theater premiere of Garfield is set on May 24, 2024. Prior to that, the date of release was set for February 16, 2024.

Production

On May 24, 2016, it was revealed that Mark Torgove and Paul A. Kaplan will write the screenplay for a new CG-animated Garfield movie that Alcon Entertainment would produce with John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner. Pre-production got under way after November 12, 2018, when Mark Dindal was named director. The future of the film was up in the air since Viacom purchased the rights to Garfield in August 2019. Dindal did clarify that the movie was still being made in December 2020, though.
Chris Pratt was revealed as Garfield’s voice actor on November 1, 2021. DNEG, a visual effects and animation team that previously worked on the animated film Ron’s Gone Wrong, will handle the animation. With the exception of China, Sony Pictures will continue to own the global distribution rights for the movie, which DNEG will create alongside Alcon. The script will instead be written by Finding Nemo screenwriter David Reynolds, it was also reported. Previously, Dindal and Reynolds collaborated on the Disney animated movie The Emperor’s New Groove. When he wasn’t contacted to voice the character, voice actor Frank Welker, who has been portraying Garfield since 2007, voiced his dissatisfaction.
As Vic, Garfield’s father, Samuel L. Jackson joined the movie in May 2022. Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, and Cecily Strong joined the cast in August 2022. Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang joined the cast in November 2022.
