Kung Fu Panda

An American media franchise by the name of Kung Fu Panda debuted in 2008 with the release of the DreamWorks Animation animated feature film of the same name. The Po Ping franchise is set in a fantasy wuxia genre version of ancient China that is populated by anthropomorphic animals and follows the exploits of the titular Po Ping, a giant panda who is improbably chosen as the prophesied Dragon Warrior and learns kung fu. Po Ping is voiced by Jack Black and Mick Wingert. Po demonstrates himself deserving as he works to achieve his destiny, despite early doubts about his standing.

Three CGI-animated films—Kung Fu Panda (2008), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), and Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)—as well as three television series—Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (2011–2016), The Paws of Destiny (2018–2019), and The Dragon Knight—make up the bulk of the franchise (2022). The television series, which aired on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, respectively, was released by Paramount Pictures for the first two films, 20th Century Fox for the third, and Universal Pictures for the fourth. A television special, Kung Fu Panda Holiday (2010), and four short films, Secrets of the Furious Five (2008), Secrets of the Masters (2011), Secrets of the Scroll, and Secrets of the Panda Paws (all 2016), have also been made.

The franchise’s original television series earned 11 Emmy Awards, and its first two animated films received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature as well as multiple Annie Awards. Prior to Wonder Woman, the previous three movies were both critically and financially successful, and the second movie had the largest box office success ever for a movie directed by a single woman (Jennifer Yuh Nelson) (2017). The series is also well-liked in China as a superb example of a Western take on the wuxia cinema subgenre.

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Unable to pursue his desire of mastering kung fu, Po, a clumsy panda, works at the noodle store owned by his goose father Mr. Ping and lives in the Valley of Peace. The Dragon Warrior, the only kung fu expert capable of deciphering the secret of the Dragon Scroll, which is claimed to hold the key to endless power, is to be revealed in a tournament conducted one day for Grand Master Oogway, the ancient spiritual leader of the valley. Everyone in the valley believes the Dragon Warrior to be one of the Furious Five, a group of five kung fu fighters Master Shifu trained to defend the valley. The Furious Five are Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane. To everyone’s shock, Oogway choose Po, who has inadvertently entered the tournament arena after arriving late thanks to a fireworks explosion.
Shifu puts Po through painful training drills because he doesn’t think he can be the Dragon Warrior and wants to get him to give up. Po, who had previously made fun of the Furious Five for his lack of kung fu prowess, perseveres in his training because he is determined to transform himself into someone he can respect. Po soon discovers that Tai Lung, a wicked kung fu fighter who has escaped from jail to exact revenge for not being given the Dragon Scroll, is heading toward the Valley and fears he won’t be able to beat him. Po is effectively taught kung fu by Shifu after realizing that he can practice martial arts when hungry. When Po receives the Dragon Scroll after finishing his training, he finds it to be empty. However, Po understands that the secret to endless strength is found inside himself, which enables him to overthrow Tai Lung and bring tranquility back to the valley.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

Along with the Furious Five, Po is finally able to fulfill his ambition of becoming a kung fu master and guarding the Valley of Peace. He encounters internal struggle, though, as he starts to remember his mother and finds out through Mr. Ping that he was adopted as a baby. Soon later, Po and the Five are dispatched on a mission to prevent the wicked peacock Lord Shen from utilizing a recently invented weapon, the cannon, to conquer all of China and eradicate the kung fu tradition. Until he is helped by a wise old soothsayer to embrace his past and remember that his parents risked their lives to save him from Shen, who had set out to exterminate all pandas after learning of a prophecy that he would be defeated by “a warrior of black-and-white,” Po continues to be tormented by thoughts of being abandoned by his real parents. When Po finds inner peace, he can destroy Shen’s new weapon, vanquish Shen, and acknowledge Mr. Ping as his father. The biological father of Po, however, is shown understanding his son’s survival in the last scene of the film.

Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

A little time after the events of the second movie, Shifu hands over control of the Jade Palace to Po, saying that the next stage of his own apprenticeship is to supervise the training of the Furious Five. Po is happy to see his biological father, Li, again while struggling with this new duty; Mr. Ping is less enthused. To build his army of Jade Zombies, the spirit warrior General Kai is ‘gathering’ Kung Fu experts from all around China, both alive and dead, according to press reports. Po and the others learn via a scroll left by Oogway that the only way to destroy Kai is with the strength of Chi, a strategy only known to the panda colonies. As a result, Po and Li travel to the hidden Panda Valley to teach Po this strategy. The pandas have long since forgotten how to harness the Chi, and Li only intended to shield his son from Kai, as Po later learns to his dismay. After making apologies with both his real and adoptive fathers, Po teams up with Ping, Tigress, and the pandas to take on Kai. In the process, they all learn the power of Chi and use it to permanently eliminate Kai. Po spreads the Kung fu and Chi teachings during his days after arriving back in the Valley of Peace.

Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

In December 2010, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg stated that the “Student” and “Master” trilogy will consist of six films, or “chapters,” with three sequels to follow Kung Fu Panda 3. In August 2016, the Kung Fu Panda 3 directors were questioned on the potential for a fourth feature; Jennifer Yuh Nelson, a co-director, said: “One by one, please. Co-director Alessandro Carloni said, “With the sequels, we don’t want to attempt to make them feel open-ended. We want to make this a beautiful diamond, and then we’ll see what happens after that. We desire it to have a sense of culmination, which we believe this film achieves. Then, if a magnificent narrative emerges, wonderful “. Nelson stated in August 2018 that she was unaware of any changes on Kung Fu Panda 4 since she had always thought of the series as a trilogy, but that she was open to the concept of a fourth film as long as it centered on Po.

DreamWorks Animation announced in August 2022 that Kung Fu Panda 4 was in development and scheduled for release on March 8, 2024.

Kung Fu Panda Holiday (2010)

The 2010 television special Kung Fu Panda Holiday, commonly referred to as Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special, had its debut on NBC on November 24. It relates the tale of Po, who, despite wanting to spend the holiday with Mr. Ping, is forced by Master Shifu to organize the yearly Winter Feast.

Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (2011–2014; 2016)

An animated television series called Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, which takes place in between the first two Kung Fu Panda movies, is based on the movie franchise. The program was supposed to debut in 2010, but due to a delay, it debuted on Nickelodeon on November 7, 2011. Only three actors from the voice cast of the series—Lucy Liu as Viper, Randall Duk Kim as Oogway, and James Hong as Mr. Ping—reprise their respective roles from the movies. On April 5, 2012, the first season’s 26 episodes came to a close. There were 26 episodes in the second season, which ran from April 6, 2012, to June 21, 2013. A third season with 28 episodes debuted on June 24, 2013, went on a long break after June 22, 2014, and then aired its last 10 episodes over the course of two years, from February 15 to June 29, 2016, to coincide with the release of Kung Fu Panda 3 in theaters.

Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny (2018–2019)

The second animated Kung Fu Panda series, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny, takes place after the events of Kung Fu Panda 3. The series, which was developed across 26 episodes by DreamWorks Animation Television and Amazon Studios, was made available on Amazon Prime Video on November 16, 2018, and on July 4, 2019, for its second and final 13-episode season. The series follows Po on a brand-new journey while teaching four young pandas (Nu Hai, Jing, and Bao), who unintentionally enter a mysterious tunnel beneath the Panda Village and absorb the chi of the four constellations, four strong and ancient Kung Fu fighters. The four buddies understand that their new mission is to use their enhanced Kung Fu skills to protect the planet from an approaching evil. Po, who is confronted with his hardest job yet in educating this motley crew of kids how to use their odd talents, assists them on their quest.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight (2022)

The third installment of the Kung Fu Panda animated series, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, debuted on Netflix on July 14, 2022, with Jack Black returning to the role of Po. The story follows Po as he must leave his home and go out on a global journey for justice and forgiveness, where he teams up with the Wandering Blade, a no-nonsense English knight. James Hong returned in the character of Mr. Ping, and Rita Ora took on the role of Wandering Blade.
