Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken Animated Film
An upcoming American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy action-comedy movie titled Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, will be released by Universal Pictures and produced by DreamWorks Animation. From a script by DeMicco and Pam Brady and a narrative by Brady, Brian C. Brown, and Elliott DiGuiseppi, it is directed by Kirk DeMicco and co-directed by Faryn Pearl.
Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Jaboukie Young-White, Blue Chapman, Eduardo Franco, Ramona Young, Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, and Jane Fonda are among the voice actors that appear in the movie.
In the movie, 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Condor) desperately wants to fit in at Oceanside High. Still, when she disobeys her mother’s (Collette) order not to go to the beach with any potential friends, Ruby learns that she is a direct descendant of the Kraken warrior queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her domineering grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Fonda).
The movie had been developing for a while when it was initially offered to DreamWorks Animation. Its original title, Meet the Gillmans, was revealed in June 2021, and casting for the role was underway. Condor, Laura Dern, Michael Sheen, and Murphy were all considered for the part. A 2022 release date was predicted.
Production on the movie was scheduled to begin in 2022, with Paul Tibbitt joining the cast to helm and Brady coming on to pen the script. The bulk of the voice cast members, Condor and Murphy’s confirmation, and DeMicco’s appointment to take Tibbitt’s place as director were all revealed in March 2023. Kelly Cooney Cilella agreed to serve as producer, and Pearl joined the team as a co-director. The movies Easy A (2010), Lady Bird (2017), and Booksmart (2019) by John Hughes served as inspiration for this one.
Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken will have its world premiere on June 15 at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and on June 30, it will hit theaters in the US.
Assumption
Ruby Gillman, a 16-year-old Kraken, finds that she is the next in line to become one of the fabled sea Kraken. She is eager to blend in at Oceanside High despite her lofty destiny. Ruby’s mother bans her from going to the beach, making blending in more complex. She learns that she is a descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and will reign as the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, her grandmother, after breaking her mother’s restrictions. A race known as the Kraken has vowed to fight for ages to save the world’s waters from the vain, power-hungry mermaids. The generational conflict intensifies when Chelsea, a well-liked mermaid, enrolls at Ruby’s school.

Production
The GWW announced in June 2021 that DreamWorks Animation was working on a movie with the working title Meet the Gillmans, with casting happening and a projected 2022 release date. Pam Brady has been confirmed as the film’s writer, while SpongeBob SquarePants’ Paul Tibbitt has been named the film’s director. In addition to Annie Murphy, Lana Condor, Laura Dern, and Michael Sheen were considered for the parts of Clarica, Ruby’s mother, and her father, respectively. Executive producers will be Chris Kuser and Christi Soper. The commencement of production was likewise anticipated for 2022.
The cast and crew were revealed on the website of Universal Pictures Ireland on March 14, 2023. Along with Condor and Murphy’s roles confirmed other new cast members of the film include Toni Collette, Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Jaboukie Young-White, Blue Chapman, Eduardo Franco, Ramona Young, Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, and Jane Fonda. At the same time, Kirk DeMicco (replacing Tibbitt), Faryn Pearl, and Kelly Cooney Cilella were revealed as the director, co-director, and producer, respectively. Teenage Kraken, DreamWorks Animation’s official name for Ruby Gillman, was also announced. The actors and crew were made known two days later to the public.
Cilella reportedly told Animation Magazine that the movie has been developing for a while. A family of sea monsters relocated to the land and lurking in plain sight was the premise of the original proposal made to DreamWorks. “Our heroine is such a lovely character, and I’m so happy for people to meet her and fall in love with her as we have,” she said. “But she’s concealing a secret she can’t tell her friends. She starts the movie as a quirky, slightly insecure, but bighearted woman. But finally, there’s no denying she has let the Kraken come to life.
She discovers that her destiny is more significant than being a typical high school adolescent and that she is meant to become the next central sea defender. Her quest for self-discovery, acceptance of a long-dormant aspect of herself, and her development into a fully realized character made for a very thrilling narrative for me to convey. DeMicco claimed that he was inspired by the John Hughes movies Easy A (2010), Lady Bird (2017), and Booksmart (2019). An octopus modeled the main character’s physique, while production designer Pierre-Olivier Vincent added “curviness to all the design language of the film,” from the automobiles to the underwater setting.
